Jumping in the Ute

Writer's picture: Toni CormieToni Cormie

I'm lucky enuff to have older dogs to lead by example but even so, i won't allow pups to jump Up till 13mths and i assist them down until they're 2yrs. Huge impact on bones. Having said that, start with a low platform (dogparks have good ones) and use treats. If you can build one at home (milk crates and mdf board), put his tucker there or a coupla fried chicken wings and walk away. Once he gets up at least 3 times/days on own, attach leash and encourage.. then add "hup" or similar cue. At 10mths, you have Lots of time for patience. If he is allowed to and does, jump up on any piece of furniture, use that to Cue and Reward
